Following changes to the OIV’s guidelines, prizes in the individual categories can be awarded for the first time in 2010. The Berlin Wine Trophy has used this opportunity to perform the first tasting in July solely with wines from the new vintages under the aegis of the OIV. Only 2009 and 2010 vintages are eligible to participate in the tasting.

Awareness and appreciation of quality is continuing to gain ground. Consumers and purchasers are paying ever more attention to quality characteristics, which are decisive in helping them to choose their purchases. And especially for wine, a product that in its individual characteristics could hardly be more multifaceted, this help is particularly necessary. The possibility, with the prizes awarded in the capital city of Berlin, to provide decisive help for the wine consumer, wine dealer or caterer in making the right selection of their purchases, and thereby in obtaining a competitive advantage over their fellow competitors, is the reason that a medal awarded at the Berlin Wine Trophy, a great international competition of world repute under the patronage of the OIV, is so valuable and coveted.
Fees based on acreage, certificates in the languages of the respective countries, special prizes, etc. show that the German Wine Marketing plc. with the Berlin Wine Trophy, endeavours to create a competition which, apart from being an absolutely objective wine tasting, places the benefits for its participants in the foreground.
Prizes awarded in the different categories, the Young Wine Trophy and special awards for the samples from biological production are the innovations in 2010 that, once again, provide impressive proof of this.
All information about the Berlin Wine Trophy 2010, the benefits for you as an entrant and the programme of the event have been made available for you on our Internet website.
In the year 2010, the Berlin Wine Trophy will forge ahead as a top-class, international wine tasting event. We look forward to welcoming you as a participant and can already guarantee today that we will have an expert, high-caliber jury to taste and judge your wines with care and objectivity according to the guidelines of the OIV.
Berlin Wine Trophy 2010
February Tasting
A figure of almost 4,000 submissions for the first round of the Berlin Wine Trophy in February speaks volumes. Within just a few years the Berlin Wine Trophy has become one of the biggest and most prestigious tastings in the world, proof of the confidence of the participants and confirmation of the first-rate work of the jurors and Deutsche Weinmarketing.
The ever-increasing number of direct international registrations applications for registration is particularly striking.
France in particular, whose vintners normally remain loyal to their national competitions, has discovered Berlin as a representative tasting and was disproportionately represented in the international comparison.
Importer of the year 2010 was Gerd Rindchen (Bönningstedt), who won the most medals for his wines. The 2009 winner Mack & Schühle (Owen) made a real impression with the best US range and the best dry white wine (2009 Montana Marlborough, New Zealand). In the Wine Trophy jury’s opinion Andrea Sartori currently stocks the best dry red wine: 2003 Amarone Corte Brà. The best premium sweet wines were from the Bienert vineyard in Volkach (2008 Volkacher Ratsherr, Ortega Trockenbeerenauslese) and from Erich Scheiblhofer in Andau, Austria (2005 Zweigelt Barrique ice wine).
Among German retailers the Penny discount supermarket chain was rated “Best Discounter 2010“, having won a host of medals for wines from its range and select promotion wines. The best producers include both large and small companies. Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Pauillac) won the trophy for best French producer. while Gruppo Italiano Vini and Cremaschi lived up to their reputations as top producers by scooping the Italian and Chilean prizes respectively. In little Luxembourg Charles Decker from Remerchen (with a 4.5 hectare vineyard) came out on top. As in 2009, the trophy for best international liqueur wine was claimed by a PX from 1902 (Cruz Conde Solera Fundación; available from Spanische Quelle, Berlin). You can find a complete list of the prizewinners in the “winter round“ of the Berlin Wine Trophy under the 2010 results.
OIV – New guidelines for conducting competitions
New guidelines were approved at the annual shareholders’ meeting of OIV – Organisation de la vigne et du vin – in June, which will be applicable as of January 2010. It goes without saying - the first competition that will apply the new guidelines will be Berlin Wine Trophy 2010. All of the details about the new guidelines as well as additional interesting information can be found on the international OIV website
Berlin Wine Trophy 2009
Prowein - Dusseldorf
As in 2008, Berlin Wine Trophy also presented special wines at ProWein in Dusseldorf in 2009. Participants of Berlin Wine Trophy were given the opportunity to register their award winning wines and to thus fully indulge in the presentation. 80 award winning wines were selected, most of them awarded with the Premium Gold medal, and these were offered for tasting to trade visitors at the Berlin Wine Trophy booth. This was a huge success, because the booth was under siege by visitors for three whole days. The booth also offered the opportunity to set scheduled meetings. This allowed importers, producers or dealers to receive their customers at our booth and to present the wines and even allow them to be tasted in a special ambiance. This way, several good business deals were completed.
The booklet – Berlin Wine Trophy 2009 – Special Wines – published especially for this presentation, can be downloaded in pdf format. In it, along with special details, you will find all of the individual point assessments made by the jury for each of the wines.
